Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive compound found in the iboga plant, used to treat substance abuse and addiction. It is believed that ibogaine can reset the areas of the brain associated with addiction by restoring normal functioning of certain receptors or neuronal pathways within the brain.
The primary mechanism by which ibogaine acts on the brain is through binding to and activating several receptors. These include serotonin, dopamine, sigma-1, and opioid receptors. Activation of these receptors results in rapid detoxification from substances of abuse, as well as a reduction in craving for those substances. This action makes it an effective treatment for opioid withdrawal symptoms as well as other forms of addiction.
In addition to binding to and activating specific receptors in the brain, ibogaine also has neurotrophic effects. Neurotrophic effects are changes in brain structure and function that promote healing and regeneration, such as increased formation of new synapses between neurons. Ibogaine literally helps rewire parts of the brain that have been altered by drug use; this process occurs over several months after taking ibogaine.
Ibogaine has also been shown to increase levels of BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor), a protein involved in learning and memory that helps protect neurons from degeneration caused by chronic drug use or excessive drinking. Increased BDNF levels may help explain why long-term recovery rates remain fairly high among those who have undergone treatment with ibogaine compared with those who pursue other forms of addiction treatment or rehab programs without using ibogaine.
Ibogaine is a powerful anti-addiction medication that can help addicts quit drugs and start over. Ibogaine works by interrupting the brain's addiction cycle, which helps to break the addictive cycle and allow the addict to start fresh. Ibogaine is not a cure for addiction, but it can be an extremely effective tool in helping addicts to overcome their addiction and start over.
